Isolate data by year to protect your business from the IRS

During an audit, the IRS will examine your firm’s electronic files.  Keep in mind some files may contain data outside the period under audit, the IRS could use this data to “fish” outside the scope of the audit.  To protect your business from the IRS, find a method for isolating all data for a given year that excludes data from other periods.   If you cannot do this, at year-end back up that year separately.
